Red Band Flour Discontinued

Okay, I’ll admit it: I’m a Pacific-Northwest-born Southern-California-Living Girl from the South. While Red Band Flour may not be recognizable to most, more than a few will be disappointed that another product identifiable from the South will be discontinued. I was as dissapointed when I heard this as all of you are now!

I contacted Kathleen Purvis, Food Editor of The Charlotte Observer in Charlotte, for help on this topic. Here is what she said about it – with tips for substituting it. White Lily, Martha White, and Southern Biscuit have been suggestions. The Red Band ‘grain recipe’ for the flour just is not the same as other brands, but maybe experimenting can help. Southern Biscuit was the only brand of self-rising flour I used in Charlotte, so I would try their regular flour first, but I know others would disagree. Also – Sanford Milling’s ‘Short Patent Snow Flake’, available in certain areas.

  • without red band flour my chocolate
chip cookies will not be the same
says my daughter.I have tried other
flour and it doesn't work as good
as red band flour. We are begging
you to bring red band flour back to
    us southern ladies.

  • I am almost 74 years old and have never used any flour other than
Red Band. Was so sad to find out that Red Band is no longer. My cakes will never be as good. I called the Smuckers Company and told them. They were sorry also that they had to discontinue the Red Band flour. I am also begging you to bring it bac.

  • For fifty years I have been uaing Red Band flour for baking, especially my wonderful wedding cakes. What will I do now? Is there a possibility that it could be brought back? I feel lost.

  • My aunt too loves Red Band and had me do a search to see why she can't find it anymore. She does not like the others as well as red band for her chocolate pound cakes. Please bring it back.

  • There will never be another flour as good as Red Band. I've used it for 45 years and I'm famous for my angel biscuits, pound cake and fruitcake. Another example of big companies swallowing up the smaller ones and losing quality in the process. I've tried Gold Medal, White Lily, and Pillsbury, but only because I was in an area where you couldn't get Red Band. No comparison. Red Band is light and not grainy. I'm extremely sad!!! Shame on Smuckers. I won't buy any of their products for disrepecting those of us who have been loyal Red Band customers.

  • My mother had been using Red Band Flour for over 30 years. She has also taught me to cook with it. None of our food will be the same. Everyone else is pouring their hearts out about cakes and cookies. It's wonderful to use in baking, but frying it's even better!!! We will be very lost without it! Please answer our Southern cries and BRING RED BAND BACK!!!

  • My mother has always used Red Band Flour and therefore since my marriage in 1988 I have used Red Band Flour. The other brands on the market do not compare. I believe in buying what works and what I like. My mother, who is 75 years old and unfamiliar with technology, asked me to also explore the reason she may not longer find Red Band Flour. We encourage the company to reconsider the production of an American staple. One less generational icon that I have to pass on to my daughter. Very sad.

  • my mama is very disappointed that you have decided to discontinue the red band flour. She has used it for 45 years making her famous biscuits, pastries and chocolate cakes. Other flour does not compare to red band flour. She has tried other brands and they're not the same. Please reconsider and bring her red band flour back.

  • My Goodness! No more Red Band. I am a 60 year old man, my grandmothers, aunts, uncles, mother, and my wife have always used Red Band, and only Red Band. Smuckers has lost all my business. I have called the Smuckers and asked for the return of Red Band. I wonder if it's because Red Band was a Southern thing? So long Smuckers!

  • I am a Southern Girl who enjoys cooking. Our family and friends have truly missed Red Band. I have tried several different brands and none of them compares to Red Band Flour. When I purchase and use self rising flour, I expect it to actually rise when I bake and be flaky and crispy when I fry foods. The only other remedy I can come up with is to buy plain flour and add the ingredients to make it self rising. 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and a pinch to 1/2teaspoon of salt to a cup (125 g) of flour is one way to do this or you can visit Paula Deen's website and enter Flour 101 in the website search area for Flour Substitutions. RED BAND please come back!
